FLEX ALUMNI CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
On March 7 FLEX Alumni organized the celebration of the International Women’s Day . Dovran Balyshov and Fatima Kubatayeva, FLEX alumni ’07 made a presentation on International Women’s Day introducing some facts on world women’s history. International Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition of women across developed and developing countries. Annually on March 8, thousands of events are held throughout the world to thank women and celebrate their achievements. Everybody at the American Corner congratulated women and girls on International Women’s Day.
One of the visitors, Nargiza Djorayeva said: “I liked the presentation as it had a lot of new information. I spent a good time with my friends.”
Results: The attendees of American Corner learnt some new facts about Women’s history. They also had an opportunity to congratulate their friends on the holiday.
JFDP ALUMNA CONTINUES ORGANIZING PROFESSIONAL SEMINARS FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS AT DASHOGUZ AMERICAN CORNER
On March 9, Arzigul Kochkarova, JFDP alumna 2006 and Dashoguz American Corner Regional Representative/Educational Advisor and Scott Milgroom, Peace Corps Volunteer organized a Professional Development Seminar at the Dashoguz American Corner for Dashoguz province English teachers. This event was attended by 23 English teachers from throughout the province. Adria Winfield, English Language Fellow, also attended and conducted a session on various methods of teaching pronunciation. In addition, there were also presentations on English words games and activities, new methods of teaching grammar, along with techniques on increasing students' conversational proficiency.
The main goal of the seminar was to introduce the participants with new ideas and teaching techniques, specifically geared towards creating more interactive classes. Various TEFL resources, provided by Peace Corps, as well as Info USA CDs and maps of the United States were distributed to the seminar participants. The attendees gained valuable information and resources to improve their teaching skills and methods. They enjoyed the presentations and were certain to begin incorporating these new concepts and ideas into their lesson plans, in addition to sharing them with their colleagues. The teachers indicated that they most enjoyed word activities and various methods of teaching pronunciation. The local English teachers express their appreciation to the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan, American Councils and Peace Corps in Turkmenistan whose assistance made this event possible.
MARY AMERICAN CORNER CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
March 7 three FLEX alumni- Merjen Agayeva’07, Lusina Mkrtchyan’07 and Bahar Nokerova, Sheker Muradova’06 BFTF alumna along with 15 participants of Make a Difference Club organized Women’s Day celebration for 30 American Corner visitors.
In the beginning of the event, Bahar Nokerova’07 along with Kerim Berdymuhamedov, a member of the Make a Difference Club conducted a PowerPoint presentation on the Top Ten Women of the Mary Region who are/were famous for their contribution to the Turkmen art, cinematography, journalism and poetry. The attendees had an opportunity to learn more about the famous ladies of the Mary region, about their backgrounds and what they are famous for.
Then Lusina Mkrtchyan’07, Sheker Muradova BFTF’06 along with three American Corner volunteers led an activity called “The Princess of the Mary American Corner”. The aim of this activity was to find the princess of the American Corner among girls through competitions on creativity, solving problems and household issues.
The following up activity was called “The best compliment maker”. All the boys had to say compliments to the Princess of the American Corner. It was an interesting practice of their English language and public speaking skills.
By the end of the event Lusine Mkrtchyan FLEX’07 led quiz on “All about Women”. The questions were mainly about women’s issues, powerful women and their contribution to the mankind.
One of the participants, Kumush Rejepova said: “This celebration was very useful, and I enjoyed participating in the competition. I gained new information about the women from my region and all over the world and I realized that women can really make changes in the society”. The participants enjoyed celebrating International Women’s Day. They gained information about famous ladies of their own region their contribution to the community, had a chance to participate in activities where they showed their creative and public speaking skills.
TEACHERS’ WORKSHOP ON TEACHING YOUNG LEARNERS
On February 24, the American Corner hosted 22 English teachers from Mary region. Adria Winfield, English Language Fellow, the US Embassy held the workshop on teaching young learners. Albina Burashnikova, Regional Representative, TEA (Teaching Excellence Award) alumna introduced the guest and announced to the topic of the workshop saying that the needs of this very special student population are unique and that accommodating them can be very challenging.
Adria Winfield started the workshop focusing on some factors to take into consideration while teaching students from 5 to 10 years old. After a short brainstorming Adria explained the activities which can encourage meaningful language use, real communication appropriate to young learners and their learning context. While participating in the activities the teachers were singing, writing animal haiku, taking interviews, telling simple stories, writing cinquains and learning global celebrations.
The teachers were also offered the review of Forum, 4, 2007 and each of them got a copy of the journal. By the end of the workshop the participants shared teaching approaches and ideas they use to make the most of each lesson.
Though all the teachers have their own ways of engaging their young learners in the learning process the workshop gave them an opportunity to learn about new activities and games to motivate students, and give the children a chance to get real enjoyment from learning process.
