On March 9, Arzigul Kochkarova, JFDP alumna 2006 and Dashoguz American Corner Regional Representative/Educational Advisor and Scott Milgroom, Peace Corps Volunteer organized a Professional Development Seminar at the Dashoguz American Corner for Dashoguz province English teachers. This event was attended by 23 English teachers from throughout the province. Adria Winfield, English Language Fellow, also attended and conducted a session on various methods of teaching pronunciation. In addition, there were also presentations on English words games and activities, new methods of teaching grammar, along with techniques on increasing students' conversational proficiency.
The main goal of the seminar was to introduce the participants with new ideas and teaching techniques, specifically geared towards creating more interactive classes. Various TEFL resources, provided by Peace Corps, as well as Info USA CDs and maps of the United States were distributed to the seminar participants. The attendees gained valuable information and resources to improve their teaching skills and methods. They enjoyed the presentations and were certain to begin incorporating these new concepts and ideas into their lesson plans, in addition to sharing them with their colleagues. The teachers indicated that they most enjoyed word activities and various methods of teaching pronunciation. The local English teachers express their appreciation to the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan, American Councils and Peace Corps in Turkmenistan whose assistance made this event possible.
