SPRING COMES TO TURKMENABAT AMERICAN CORNER
On March 1st Ali Hamrayev FLEX ’09, Lachyn Italmazova FLEX’09, Sabina Saburova FLEX ’09, Kachara Beshimova FLEX ’09, Maksat Aliyev FLEX ’09 conducted a presentation, which was dedicated to Women’s History Month. The main goal of the event was to acquaint participants with Women’s History Month and to demonstrate the great leaders – women through the long path American history. The facilitators of the event prepared information about Women’s History Month and presented it on the Open House. After presentation guest speakers William Stevens (Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy Ashgabat) and William Middleton (Information Resource Officer) gave a speech about Women’s History and famous women nowadays in America as Nenci Pelosi, Hillary Clinton. As the result of the activity visitors comprehended new knowledge about how women had struggled for reaching equality, the right to vote, good education. Also participants could see the important role of women in the modern society.
WOMEN AND SOCIETY
On March 2nd Dashoguz American Corner had an opening ceremony of Women’s History Month by Anahan Seytmedova, FLEX’08. After opening speech there was a debate on the topic “Women and Society”. 26 visitors of Dashoguz American Corner took part in the debate. At the beginning of the activity participants were divided into groups and each of participant received piece of paper where they wrote down their association with the word “a woman”, it was a warm up game, which was followed by debate itself. During the activity participants had an opportunity to share opinion, exchange information and improve their debating skills.
DEFINE YOUR OWN CHARACTER
On March 2nd Sadap Rahmanova, FLEX alumni’09 and Mary American Corner and Sheker Mametgurbanova conducted character development club at Mary American Corner. 12 visitors attended the club; the main goal of the club was to introduce three types of character and the right way of defining your own character. During the activity the facilitators gave definition of Personal, Social and Group-based characters, and the activity continued with a small discussion within the group. At the end of the activity there was a mini-quiz on “Defining Your Own Character”. With the help of the event Mary American Corner visitors improved their listening skills and they received an inspiration for future personal development.
WOMEN’S ROLE IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY
On 24th and 25th of February Jennet Berdiyeva, FLEX alumni ’09 and Batyr Gurbansahedov, AC volunteer organized a presentation in Mary American Corner. The main purpose of the presentation was to acquaint people with famous Africa- American Women and their role in American history. During the presentation Jennet Berdiyeva showed movie maker project and demonstrated the famous African-American women of our days and the last century, after the presentation 14 high school students had an opportunity listen to the story of African -American women’s awakening against human rights in the United States in the middle of the 20th century. At the end of the presentation the facilitator made short slide show with quotes of famous African American women about such life important topics as freedom, equality and right for setting goals.
The next day on 25th February Mary American Corner volunteer Batyr Gurbansahedov organized a “Brain Ring”. During the game all participant divided into three teams and compete on the main topics of the month.
Participants had an opportunity to expound differences between racial and gender discrimination, compare opportunities of African-American women on work, education and right of the word changed over the years.
