 While being in the USA Tatyana Malyhina ’10 prepared a video about American fast food as pizza, hamburgers, French fries and also she talked about American restaurants. As her host family had their own restaurant Tatyana Malyhina ’10 with their help shot this video where she was able to show various restaurants with the most famous pizza and the biggest one. Also the movie included with episodes of other restaurants as Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese food. Thus, Tatyana Malyhina ’10 was going to show the diversity of American food and one more American culture. Also Tatyana explained about why there are many fast-food restaurants in the USA sharing her experience when she was helping her host father in preparing fast food at their restaurant. The video was going for one hour and it was much entertained time for attendees. Moreover, she talked about how people work in those restaurants and what differences of serving among other café. FLEX finalist Ilhan Yoliyev said: “I really enjoyed watching this video it gave me an idea about visiting American restaurants in my upcoming trip.” Besides learning American history, traditions, holidays, etc. ACT visitors were able to know also about American food and what peculiarities make the difference comparing to Turkmen food. Also attendees could see the diversity of food and cultures in the USA.

FLEX alumna Olga Setmuradova organized spoken English class for 16 students of different age. The main goal of the activity was to improve students English speaking skills by putting them into situation where they have to use English a lot. At the beginning of class the students learned how to say their phone numbers in English. Then, Olga Seytmuradova ’10 explained what a poem is, its structure, and different kinds of rhymes. Following that the alumnae read some poems in English, and encouraged the participants to make little poems on their own, giving participants 10 minutes to do it. After that the students made one little poem altogether. The last activity was a usual exercise for the class – a situation from a real life. The class chose a place, people and the case of the occasion they wanted to act out. Olga Seytmuradova and one of the students acted out the situation, thus helping others to listen to a real English spoken conversation. Students found the class very amusing and helpful.
FLEX alumna Yevgeniya Samitova ’10 started holding Conversation Club at American Corner Turkmenabat. The main goal of the club is to help students to develop their public speaking skill in English and at the same time to be able to understand the foreign speech. Having good vocabulary skills Yevgeniya Samitova ’10 gives a lot of new words and their meanings, slangs and idioms. At the first lesson attendees started learning with new phrases and then they had to make up sentences using as many new words as possible. At the end Yevgeniya gave them an assignment to find new words and to explain their meaning in English for the next lesson. AC visitor Alxander Kazakov said: “I think Conversation Club will be really useful for me as it helps me to be more self-confident in my speech and having good vocabulary skills.” Conversation Club is the great chance for ACT visitors to overcome their fear of speaking in English as learning new words and phrases enhance the knowledge of English and thus students become more self-confident, initiative and sociable.
